Back in the Lou
Now that I've spent the past couple of weeks in St. Louis things finally seem to be returning to normal. For the most part I've been working my normal hours at work aside from heading out early last Monday due to unexpected exhaustion by the end of the day and taking a personal day on Friday to take care of some personal business (food stamps, phone/internet, bills).
Last week I had a career fair to attend in Kirksville, MO and another info session at Wash U. While a bit overwhelmed at various points last week, I was more than happy to be back in the office. I'm still catching up with some of my workload, but this week I feel like I've finally readjusted to life back in St. Louis. Our team in the office is starting to work on some of the projects we've discussed this summer (children's art auction, Kids 4 Kids run, social committees, etc.), and despite still having some organizational items I have to take care of, I feel like by Thanksgiving, I'll be right where I need to be in my role as the recruitment leader.
I still have some things that I haven't been able to do just yet, including stopping by L'Ouverture to say hi to the students there. It's something I've been wanting to do since I've been back, but haven't had the time just yet. From what I've heard, most of the students that I worked with one-on-one are doing well, and still being mentored by another Corps Member. While I'm a little jealous of them, I think it only helps them to have multiple people who are willing to listen and care about them. Nonetheless, I'll be very excited to be able to see them when I finally can get a little time to visit L'Ouverture.
One of the toughest things I've had to deal with not only since being back, but since moving into a 9-5 job is the amount of time I have after work. Since my workday doesn't start until 8:30 or 9, I'm not nearly as tired when I get home, so I feel like I should be doing something else. You can only watch so much TV before you get sick of it and I'm not someone who does well with spending so much time at home when I have energy to be out. I decided last night that I'm going to inquire about helping at a high school with boys basketball. Not only will it get me out of the house, I'll have a chance to work at a higher level and learn some new things. Of course, I'm looking at this as something to do for maybe only a couple of hours a night for 2-3 nights a week, but I figure my services are completely free, so there has to be some school who will want my help. If that doesn't work out, I may take a cooking class......it's something so different for me that I would welcome the challenge.
All and all, it's good to be back to St. Louis, and I'm just waiting for Addie to be born before coming to GB. Then I'll be able to update everyone on how things went down South.
